About  matilda

I am a performer and choreographer based in Helsinki, active in various working groups within the fields of dance and performance art. I have a Master’s degree in Dance Arts (2020). In autumn 2025, I started my artistic doctoral research at the Uniarts Helsinki Theatre Academy.

At the core of my artistic practice is an interest in bodily intelligence – nonverbal knowledge that accumulates and becomes visible through movement. I am also fascinated by how imagination, beliefs, and fantasies affect our sense of the body – and of the self. I want to explore the potentiality in dance to re-discover and re-define the human body.

Over the past six years, my work has focused on exploring relationships between humans and other animals and possibilities for interspecies collaboration. This has led me to work in two research projects combining science and art. In the project Can animals be expressed? The challenges of conceptualising animals in sciences and arts (2020–2022), we asked how animals might be told, performed, and conceptualized in ways that acknowledge their minds, perspectives, and agency. From 2022 to 2023, I continued working on animal-themed art in the research project Speaking on behalf of the biospheric voiceless: the impact of language on the emotions and attitudes concerning non-human animals, where my focus was particularly on how animal voices can emerge within performative art. Through these research projects, I have created the works tervesin, Kyy, Performing Animalities – A Praxis, Lokkijuttu, Lajienvälisiä kohtaamisia, and Kettu katsoo takaisin – Eläinrepresentaatioista, and have written several texts.

My most recent works include What Kind of Animal Are You? (2024), a solo performance exploring human animality created in collaboration with sociologist Salla Tuomivaara; Susi hukassa (2024), a piece about the representation of the wolf made with Ollab-group; and Surunvalittelu (2025), a mourning act set amidst the cold shelves of a supermarket meat section.

In addition to my own choreographic works focused on animals and animality, I have worked as a dancer in choreographer Veli Lehtovaara’s performance Nature Untitled | Movements I–III (2022), which explores ecological poetics. I have also worked as a co-director and co-choreographer with Joel Teixeira Neves on the performance Voyeur, which delves into the gaze and the experience of being seen. Voyeur has been performed three times (2017, 2019, and 2020) with different working groups.

I am also an arts pedagogue with experience teaching dance to young people, adults, and professional dancers. I have worked at a dance school, taught morning classes for professionals, and led dance courses that investigate interspecies relationships.
