A multidisciplinary project funded by the Kone Foundation explores how language and different ways of speaking influence emotions related to non-human animals, how these emotions shape attitudes toward them, and what this means for strengthening animals’ societal “voice.”
The climate crisis, species extinction, and animal industries pose a threat to the well-being and even the existence of many animal species and individuals. Addressing this threat in a meaningful way requires a fundamental shift in attitudes. Achieving such a shift demands a deeper understanding of the factors that influence those attitudes.
This project, combining science and art, brings together researchers and artists from different fields. By generating knowledge about the relationship between language, emotion, and attitudes toward animals, the project offers new perspectives and tools for fostering attitudinal change, ultimately supporting the ethical treatment of other animals.
In the project’s artistic work, language, emotion, and the voices of other species are expressed through various artistic media: exhibitions, performances, video works, and a theatrical script.
Duration: 2022-2024.
The project's closing event is in December 2025.
Project leader: Elisa Aaltola
Others in the working group: Matilda Aaltonen, Miia Grénman, Outimaija Hakala, Johanna Kaakinen, Pipsa Lonka, Panu Pihkala, Mikko Puumala, Henna Rouhiainen and Juulia Räikkönen.
