The ways in which non-human animals are represented, expressed, or otherwise conceptualized lie at the heart of their societal status and treatment. Cultural narratives about animals, representations repeated in media, educational materials, and the arts, as well as scientific conceptions of animals, all profoundly shape the human–animal relationship.
Voiko eläintä kertoa? (in English Can animals be expressed?) is a research project focused on the methods through which animals are conceptualized. Its central question is: which methods help us approach or grasp the essence, mind, or perspective of animals? The working group brings together philosophy, sociology, folklore studies, poetry, visual arts, and performance, offering a multidisciplinary approach to the topic. The working group also includes a research project of the same name funded by the Kone Foundation.
Duration: 2020-2022
The closing event of the project was in December 2022, at Puistokatu 4.
Project leader: Elisa Aaltola
Others in the working group: Matilda Aaltonen, Laura Gustafsson, Pauliina Haasjoki, Outimaija Hakala, Liisa Kaski, Pipsa Lonka, and Salla Tuomivaara.
