Matilda Aaltonen is a dancer, choreographer, and researcher based in Helsinki, working in the fields of dance and performance art. In her work, Aaltonen explores corporeality and ecology, human animality, the relationships between humans and other animals, and the possibilities of interspecies collaboration. Much of her work is done within artistic groups that focus on collective practices. Aaltonen’s works have been presented at venues such as Zodiak – Center for New Dance, HAM Helsinki Art Museum, Reality Research Center, Barker Theatre, the Moving in November Festival, and Mänttä Art Festival. Between 2020 and 2023, her artistic work was carried out as part of two research projects combining science and art. These projects investigated how animals can be represented and how their voices can be heard in artistic contexts. Aaltonen has also worked as dancer in pieces by choreographers Veli Lehtovaara (Finland) and Lea Moro (Switzerland).
Aaltonen holds a Master’s Degree in Arts (Dance). In August 2025, she started doctoral studies in artistic research at the University of the Arts Helsinki Theatre Academy. |
